May I Show You to Your Seat?

One of the most complex things involved in planning your wedding is figuring out where everyone should sit at your reception. Some couples opt to let everyone sit wherever they choose - which is perfectly fine. But know that if you go this route, most tables will not be completely full (so plan to have quite a few more chairs than you do guests) and some families may have a hard time finding enough seats to sit together. While assigning guests to tables (or to certain seats if you prefer) requires more prep work, guests will be thankful that you've eliminated the guesswork in figuring out where to sit.

So if you elect to have assigned seating, then you'll need to have escort cards of some sort so that your guests will know where to sit. You can get creative with displaying (and distributing) the cards:

or you can go for a traditional display.

The main point is to make sure guests can find their card easily - its usually best to sort the cards alphabetically.

I am most determined to say "I DO" under something as beautiful as ...

Its just something about a (Bamboo Arbor, Canopy, Wood Cabana, Chuppah, or Pergola) that just helps define a space and centers guest attention on you and your groom. I love the ability to make them as unique or simple as you would like. Materials are based on your own budget and decor but maybe you have a man in your life who is great at building! You could ask this of him as a wedding gift that could later find a home in your backyard. Take a look at a few for inspiration and examples of execution.

I care not what kind, I just MUST have one =)

The traditional "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue" is fresh in every newly-engaged woman's mind. How will you fulfill the tradition that is said to bring you good luck on your wedding day? Well ladies, never fear, I've gathered some ideas for your "something blue." You can monogram your new initials or wedding date in blue thread on the inside of your gown. If you're a little more adventurous, wear a blue crinoline instead of white, or get custom-made blue Converse to wear for dancing. What about wearing blue heels on your big day or inscribing the bottom of your shoes with your wedding date and new name in blue ink? And you know I can't resist a sentimental option...your bridesmaids and special friends can pin small blue bows on your crinoline and make wishes for your happy years ahead as a married couple. Ahh my heart is at Red Corral Ranch. As I get ready for this weekend's wedding at Red Corral Ranch, I can't help but think of my last wedding at the same venue, with a bride of the same name (this weekend Tori S, last wedding was Tori D)!

Ask any wedding professional and they’ll tell you that invitations set the tone for your wedding. And boy, have invitation choices expanded in the last few decades. Gone are the days when couples had a choice of three invitation styles in standard black, white or ecru. Now, there are numerous types of printing methods in a variety of colors. Here’s a quick overview of the types of invitation printing:

Engraved Wedding Invitations - Engraving is the most traditional form of wedding invitation printing, and one of the most expensive. Text is etched onto a copper plate, which is then coated with ink and wiped clean, leaving the ink only in the indentations. Soft, high-quality paper is pressed hard against the plate, causing it to deform into the etchings, resulting in raised, crisp text.

Thermography - Thermography was developed as a less expensive alternative to engraving. The printer uses ink and a powder resin combined with heat to reproduce the raised lettering effect of engraving. The text has a shiny finish and is often said to not be as sharp as engraving.

Letterpress - This old-fashioned technique has become popular again. A letterpress printer presses inked letters or designs into a piece of paper, forming an indented surface. By repeating the process, he or she can create images with more than one color. Many people appreciate the tactile nature of letterpress, although some dislike its lack of crispness.

Embossing or Blind Embossing - Most often used for small insignias, monograms, or return addresses, this process creates a raised impression on paper by running the paper through two metal sheets. When no ink is used, it is called "blind" embossing.

Offset Printing - Most modern printing is offset printing, also known as lithography. From magazines to postcards, this flat style of printing is a familiar one, and appropriate for an informal wedding invitation. Traditionally, an inked image is transferred from an inked plate to a rubber "blanket", which is then passed over the paper.

'Tis the Season to Plan Your Wedding

The holidays are a time when many couples become engaged. Maybe that's you and you're wondering what the first steps in planning should be...or maybe you've been engaged for a while but you haven't exactly gotten the ball rolling on everything yet. Whatever the case may be, here are some of the first things you should do when you first start planning your big day:

1) Announce your engagement. First tell those closest to you - your family and friends. Then share it with the world - throw an engagement party and/or print an announcement in the paper. If you want to be very 21st-century, launch a wedding website (check out this post by Jacklyn dedicated to doing just that).

2) Buy an agenda. Even if you're not typically one to carry around a huge planner detailing every minute of your day (or maybe especially if you're not), you're going to need some way to track all the meetings, appointments, information, and decisions over the next several months. Starting off by keeping everything written down in one place will help you stay less stressed throughout the entire process.

3) Set the date. You've probably already realized that the first thing people ask you when they hear that you're engaged is, "When is the wedding?!" If you're going to have a long engagement and aren't too worried about setting the date, don't stress yourself out about it. But its pretty difficult to move forward with the rest of your plans until you at least have a pretty good idea of when the special day will be. Next up (as far as the actual planning goes): set the budget and pick your venue.

4) ENJOY! No matter how long you are engaged (weeks, months, or more than a year), there will never be another time like this in your relationship. Make sure to schedule time for the two of you to have fun together (without focusing on your wedding), but enjoy the planning process as well. Many of us have spent our entire lives dreaming about our future weddings, but even if you haven't - and planning something of this importance does not sound enjoyable - figure out what will make this time pleasant for you and do it. One of my favorite ideas is to buy a journal dedicated to writing down special memories from this time that you can look back on for years to come.

Guestbooks. It seems the days of a book with lined pages where guests only sign their names are gone and brides are trying to come up with the most creative way for guests to sign in, and why not? It can be such a personal reminder of the people who shared your wedding day with you. I think it's a sweet idea to have your guests sign something that can double as a decoration in your home. If you're sappy like me, then you will love the idea of your friends and family writing a personal note with marriage advice or a special wish, or a specific memory about you and your husband as a couple. The options are endless!

With winter finally hitting the Houston area and Christmas break near, how can anyone not think of Hot Cocoa and Tea!! In Celebration of COLD weather I thought of having a “Keep Warm Party” for my close female friends. These ideas would work great on your children’s first day off for Christmas break, or for your own “Keep Warm Party”. Just add them to your Hot Cocoa and Tea Bar or your children’s sweets station:

Keep Warm Décor:

Adult:

1.) Pearl Snowballs-

What you will need:
-Styrofoam Balls (different sizes)
-Clear Glue & paint brush
-Plastic Pearls
-Ribbon or string

Take Styrofoam balls in different sizes and brush clear glue onto them. Next sprinkle plastic pearls on the Styrofoam balls until completely covered. That’s it!

You can do variations of this idea by using glitter instead of plastic pearls. For a non-sticky version try using push pins with pearl accents instead of glue and plastic pearls. You can then place your finished balls on a serving platter around your favorite scented candles as a centerpiece*. You can also hang these balls at different lengths above your food or drink station by placing the ribbon or string through the Styrofoam balls before decorating them.

2.) Campfire Pots-

What you will need:
-Clay pots
-Small filler size stones
-Tea lights

Place some of the small stones down in the pots then add a tea light to the center. Add more stones until the metal sides of the tea lights are hidden.

*make sure there is a barrier between the candles and the plastic pearls, as not to have a melted mess.

Children:

1.) To make the Snow Balls kid friendly have them help you make them using glitter. You can even have them help you make snow men with the various sizes. Attach the snow man to a small painted cardboard square, to have him become a centerpiece.

2.) To make the “Campfire Pots” more kid friendly switch out the small tea lights for flameless tea lights. Have them help you collect small twigs from the yard to add to the pot to make them more realistic.

Keep Warm Eats & Drinks:

Adult:

1.) Snowman shooters-

The recipe for these cute little shooters I found on Babble.com… To make them a little more adult add Baileys Irish Cream to the shooter.

Adults & Children:

1.) White Chocolate & Hot fudge drizzle Trail mix-

Combine your own assortment of nuts, pretzels, and M&M’s. Next combine your mix to your melted white chocolate and drizzle the hot fudge on top. Serve warm or section of mixture into individual containers for children to have while watching their favorite Christmas movie.

2.) Marshmallow Dippers-

What you will need:
-Marshmallows
-Hot Fudge
-Stiff Straws and Straight Candy Canes

Stick the Straws into the flat tops of the Marshmallows then dip the opposite sides into melted hot fudge and let them dry. For a peppermint twist replace the straws with the candy cane sticks. Serve these Dippers alongside your cups of Hot Cocoa.

Hope these collected ideas will allow you to enjoy the cold weather in a warm way =)

Twilight - You Know this Post had to Happen

Okay, I'm going to admit it. I am a HUGE Twilight fan. I've read all four books (some several times), and I've been waiting anxiously for what seems like forever for Breaking Dawn to premiere. And yes...that was me. The 33 year-old in loungewear and no makeup (along with two great friends) at the midnight showing on November 18th. Don't judge me. It was totally worth it.

I'm around weddings a LOT; therefore, the ceremony scenes weren't as emotional for me as they seem to be for others in the theater. However, what I did pay careful attention to (besides the decor) was the gown. Much like Princess Catherine, Bella (or for the fans out there - Alice, really) chose a long-sleeve number. Unlike The Princess though, the gown was uber form-fitting, and had an amazing sheer cutout at the back.

I predict we will see a LOT more long-sleeve creations coming in from the designers (we are already starting to). And really...we need them. It seems like 95% of the gowns are there are strapless ... a girl needs options. My guess is we will also see more high neck - low back styles around as well :-)

If you decide to create a wedding website, here are some tips for the perfect site:

1) Easy, memorable URL: If available, try to secure a domain name that has both of your names - this makes it more memorable for your family and a bit more special for you, too. Try combinations like these examples:

Or you can make sure your wedding website fits on the invitations by using a URL shortener like Google's URL shortener or Bitly.

2) Information for Venues: You'll want your guests to have as much information as possible so they can easily find the venues and arrive on time. This page can have the following:

Interactive map that can supply directions. One way is to embed a Google Map.
Phone number for a contact at the Venue
Time Ceremony starts

Pro tip: Include a link to download a document with location, phone number and other details for the venue. Some attendees will want to print the map out and have the information at their fingertips on your big day.

3) Hotel Information: List multiple hotels in the area to offer your guests plenty of options at different price ranges. Be sure to include the following information on your hotel page:

Location
Contact information for the hotel
Any special rates or codes a guest should mention to get a special rate

4) Registry information: Many stores offer an online element for their registries. You can link directly to your registry from this page. Popular registries to include are:

Macy's
Crate and Barrel
Bloomingdales
Williams-Sonoma

Pro Tip: You can even add items that are not part of an official registry. For example, you can add your Amazon.com wish list or a link to a specific item on Etsy!

5) Proposal Story: Everyone loves a great love story, so give the people what they want! This is your chance to talk about how the proposal happened and everyone will naturally want to know all the details.

6) Photo Albums: Photo albums on wedding sites can be compiled into different categories. Here are ideas for how to organize your photos into different albums:

Engagement Pictures
Wedding Pictures
Honeymoon Pictures

Pro tip: For the wedding and honeymoon pictures, put up a cute placeholder image and add the photos after you're officially a Mr. and Mrs.!

7) RSVP form: Let your guests RSVP straight from the website. An easy way to do this and keep it all organized is to make a form using Google Docs, embed it in the site, and set up the form to notify you when someone has sent an RSVP.

Make this form short and sweet with a comments section so your guests can send a personalized message. Here's an idea for what fields to include in your RSVP form:

Wedding Party List - Show your friends you're grateful for all their support by mentioning them with his and hers lists. You can even list a fun fact about why they were chosen like "Sam introduced us at her Halloween party!"
Comment Form - This lets people leave general well wishes on your site that will be displayed publicly.

9) Vendors: Want to show some love to that cute Etsy shop that handmade your dress? Here's the chance to promote vendors that you're excited about. You can list this as links to their sites with a short description of why you love them.

10) Wedding Date: Be sure to include this on the homepage and many additional pages, perhaps at the bottom of each page (the footer) or incorporated at the top in the header.

Soooo many things to be thankful for! Something To Celebrate is doing well: the entire STC team is really, just plain awesome (we've got a GREAT group of girls right now!), and our clients are the best - usually graduate from client to friend status in no time flat! We're healthy, the weather's gorgeous, we're safe.... an abundance of things for which to be thankful!

We're spending time with my side of the family today, getting ready for a lunchtime Thanksgiving feast. The highlight of my day so far? Spying from the next room as my mom taught my 3 year old daughter (she'll be 4 on Saturday!) how to set a table. I love family traditions, and it warms my heart to see them pass from one generation to the next, with just some slight updates and adjustments. And that's what I'm thankful for most this Thanksgiving - my family.

I hope you're spending the holiday with those you love. Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours!

Wedding Cake Alternatives

My husband and I didn't have a wedding cake at our reception (I know, gasp!!!). Our venue provided dessert, so we chose to use that as our dessert entree. We did give out cake balls and mini cupcakes as favors and used them to do the ceremonial "cake cutting/feed each other cake" exchange for the cameras. It got me to thinking about couples out there who decide, for one reason or another, that they would rather not have a traditional wedding cake at their reception. Well recent wedding trends provide so many options for these couples. Even if you decide to have a traditional wedding cake at your reception, you can still incorporate one or more of these options to give your guests variety. Check it out...

Winter is just around the corner. No, really it is. I know that's hard to believe when its 72 degrees outside today, but the first day of winter is just over 5 weeks away. Getting married in Texas in the winter months means taking a gamble as to what kind of weather you'll have on your wedding day.

(Wait, who am I kidding? Getting married in Texas means taking a gamble as to what kind of weather you'll have unless you're getting married in July or August. In which case it will be hot. Really, really hot.)

The reality is that those planning to get married in Texas will probably never get to have a Winter Wonderland Wedding. But I love cold weather...so let's dream.

So we all love the color gray. There is no shame in it. But, after a season (or two), I'm ready for a little color! Emerald green has been all over the runway, and I think it would be gorgeous for a wedding. The saturated green would obviously look gorgeous next to hot pink flowers, but imagine how pretty it would be with all white flowers, variations of green, washed out robins-egg blue or, for the brave, turquoise. Love! You could incorporate the colors in bridesmaids dresses, obvie, but also your flowers, linens, tableware, and stationery. I wish I was getting married so I could use it! There are so many beautiful colors, don't be afraid of using them.

Tips for a Stress-Free Wedding Day

You've planned for the big day for weeks, months, or maybe even years. A lot of hard work and time went into making your wedding the happiest day of your lives. Make sure you can put that aside and actually enjoy your wedding! I have seen super-stressed brides, and have also witnessed relaxed, care-free brides.. guess who ends up having more fun? Here are a few tips to staying calm on your wedding:

Get plenty of rest the night before. It will be a long day, and you will need all your energy on the dance floor. If you know it may take you a while to fall asleep because you're anxious, then go to bed an hour or so before you need to be asleep to allow for that.
Delegate tasks. Don't try to do everything by yourself. If you have a wedding planner, this shouldn't be as much of an issue for you. Make sure you're organized, and delegate all of your tasks to reliable friends and family members. If there's something that you must do yourself, try to get it done a few days before the wedding so you aren't worrying about it last-minute.
Pamper yourself. Hit the spa. Go get that massage you really deserve. Get a manicure, pedicure and whatever else your heart desires. You want to look and feel your best for the big day.

Eat. Take enough time to slow down and grab a bite. If butterflies won't allow you to have breakfast the day-of, then try to have something light like toast. It'll calm your nerves and keep you going.
Take "me" time. If you start to feel really stressed out, or too much is going on, just step outside and clear your head. Sit alone, chat with a friend outside, enjoy the weather or do whatever else you know will make you feel at ease.
Remember to Have Fun! You shouldn't spend the happiest day of your life worrying about something that may possibly go slightly wrong. Things happen, but you will mainly remember how you felt and the fun you had. Twenty years from now, you won't care about the minor things that went wrong.

The Knot is hosting a sort of competition, comparing each city's vendors against each other in order to produce a "best of" list. Sure, we've won this "competition" four years now, but we're not
resting on our laurels. And, ok, we might be a bit competitive. ;) A bit.

You’re Now the Mrs. – Does your I.D. Prove it?

Even if your new marriage license says you are now his Mrs., there are many other legal documents you should update. If you haven’t contacted some of the important agencies you and your spouse may have problems when tax season rolls around.

Social Security Administration: Contacting the SSA should most likely be the first step a now married tax payers should take. Simply visit your local SSA office and request a SS-5, which is an Application for a Social Security Card. Hand over your marriage license (for proof) and explain that you would like to be issued a new card with your married last name. This form can also be found on the Social security website by following the link www.socialsecurity.gov

DMV: I KNOW... I know the lines of horror at the DMV! But making a trip to the D.M.V. is the only way to change your D.L. (There is a fee so make sure you have all documents needed and forms of payment available)

Changing your Passport: (wait till after honeymoon if ticket has already been issued to your maiden name) If needing to change your name on your passport it is important to know that if it is within one year or less of the issue date you will NOT be charged but if it is more you will. To change your name on your passport within a year or less of its issue date you will need to complete a Form DS-5504, this form can be obtained online at , through a passport agency, or a Acceptance Facility. If you need to expedite the process because you are going overseas for your honeymoon keep in mind there is an addition charge of $60. More information can be found on www.travel.state.gov

Don’t forget to notify your employers (how could they NOT know though you’ve been gushing a bout the big day for months). However it is essential that HR knows for tax and payroll purposes. And Brides please remember that when issued a Marriage License you still must reach out to all important agencies to confirm your new name change.

Events to Celebrate: Miller's 60th Birthday Party

Helping couples plan their perfect wedding is fabulous. However, having the opportunity to work with them again and again is the bees knees. :-) I had a blast helping Maricela and Brooks with their big day, and was THRILLED with Brooks' mother contacted me to coordinate his dad's 60th Birthday Bash. It was an 8 hour long, 4-leg party complete with roasts, toasts, limos, laughter and loads of fun. Here are a few pictures of the first two stops taken by my dear friend, Kylene Sherer. One of my absolute favorite decor items of any wedding is the table setting. I LOVE a well thought out, expertly executed table setting. Whether elaborate or simple, a well set table can set the tone for your reception. So don't overlook it. One of my favorite moments of any wedding I plan is when the reception set up has been completed and I can take a glimpse of the reception space before any guests have entered it. I love seeing how all of the elements--linens, flowers, china--come together to make a beautiful space. Take a look at some of these beautiful settings.

Hopefully, you and your husband will celebrate each other all year long, but one day a year will forevermore be extra special to you and your marriage - your anniversary, of course! There are many ways you can make that day memorable each year, but one of the most common is giving each other an anniversary present. And if you're anything like me...giving presents can be quite difficult!

Though it may seem silly to stick to the "traditional" anniversary themed-gifts (ie, 25th is gold, 50th is silver), it might be a good place to start. Even just to get ideas churning in your head.

Happy-Anniversary has a great table that lists all the different Traditional and Modern gift themes, plus various ideas for each one. Check it out! Its never too early to start thinking about your first anniversary...maybe you can even steal an idea or two for Christmas or his birthday.

Then, take a picture of the two of you holding that picture. On your second anniversary, frame the picture from your first anniversary, and take a picture of the two of you holding that picture. Escort Cards & Seating Charts

The way to a smooth wedding day is to try and be the most organized. And of course the organization starts before the big day even rolls around. Trying to organize your guest by creating a seating chart can seem like the elephant in the room, when you already have so much to still sort out. However, assigned seats will help eliminate guest confusion and awkwardness when trying to find a comfortable place to sit at your reception. You don't want guest to be split up unintentionally from a date or your favorite uncle too far away form you when he's aiding you in the "father daughter dance".

Don't feel overwhelmed with the task pull in your groom or maid of honor and brainstorm. There are also plenty of programs and websites to help you create a chart (try weddingwire.com). Having a seating chart will even help the kitchen staff when it comes down to specialty entrees and place settings. You can supply your wedding coordinator with both a list of guest and a seating chart to help guide guest day of. Here are some inspiring and beautiful escort card tables. Take note of the feeling each one promotes and the flow of how the guest will move about to find their place.

Keep in mind your organization wont go unnoticed by guest when translated into a beautiful escort card table. Having amazing escort cards printed to compliment your invitations and table numbers will sure add to your wedding day decor. Many times these escort card tables play a large roll in the decoration of your cocktail hour as guest wait anxiously to see your reception venue. You can use them as a sneak peak at to the fabulous experience you have awaiting them. Some brides have even used their escort cards as a romantic breezeway leading to their outdoor wedding space. Groom's Cake

A groom's cake is a tradition that started, and is still associated with, the South. It's a gift from the bride to the groom, and usually chocolate, but can really be any flavor. The groom's cake is smaller than the wedding cake and reflects a particular hobby or interest of the groom. Traditionally, the groom's cake was not served at the reception, but sliced and given to guests as a wedding favor. Something new I learned was that single women would take home their slice and sleep with it under their pillow, so they would dream about their future husbands. Lately, the groom's cake is usually served at the reception along with the wedding cake.

I found some very interesting and unique ideas for a groom's cake; some of my favorites are shown below.

I personally think having a groom's cake is such a great idea because it gives your future husband something at the wedding that is all about him. He can choose his favorite flavor, design it into whatever he loves, and it can tell a great story about him - or even a cute story about the couple.

The Who, Whats, and Whens of Tipping

Tipping can be such a tricking subject, but it's one we are asked about often. Who should you tip? How much should you tip them? And when? Some will tell you only those who don't own their business deserve gratuity. Others say there are certain people who should automatically get tipped. Some believe in tipping everyone. Others believe in tipping no one. There are many differing opinions on the subject.

I think the easiest way to answer the who portion is this: You should tip anyone you felt went above and beyond your expectations.

As for how much: Tip them an amount you feel is appropriate and with which you are comfortable. If asked, I typically suggest the below dollar amounts (again, only if they exceeded your expectations)...

Hair / Makeup person - 15 - 20%
Officiant - $200 - $300, if the officiant was not hired through an officiating company.

Photographer / Videographer - $50 - $200
Ceremony Musicians - $15 - $20 per member
Band - $20 per member
DJ - $50 - $100
Waitstaff - Check your contract. If it is not already included, 18 - 20% of the total food costs (Not the total bill - which could include rentals, labor, etc.). If it has been included, I would still give a little something extra to the server who personally waits on you that evening.
Transportation - Check your contract. If it is not already included, 10 - 15%.

And now for the when: You should always tip after the service is complete. (Or, you can give the tips to your coordinator, and she will gladly take care of distributing them for you.)

And probably the most important thing of all: Don't forget to give online praise and to write thank you notes. Most wedding industry vendors like to display their thank yous for other potential clients to see. Sending a little praise goes a long way. It is appreciated perhaps more than anything else.

Until recently, I had not really thought about just how many song choices have to be made when planning a wedding. Its more than just picking a song for your First Dance – you’re probably also wading through decisions on Father/Daughter & Mother/Son dances, cake-cutting songs, bouquet & garter toss songs, processionals, recessionals, and the list goes on. Whew!

Of course, each category above has it’s classic choices (Butterfly Kisses or Isn’t She Lovely for the Father/Daughter Dance, Here Comes the Bride or Canon in D for the processional), which doesn’t at all mean you shouldn’t choose them. But if there are songs that hold a special place in your heart, then by all means choose those!

Something that brides might not think about amidst all the hub-bub of planning is preserving their wedding dress, either for a future daughter or relative to wear, or just because you love it! Unfortunately, clothing starts the process of breaking down from the instant you wear it, slow as it may be (we're talking many, many years). The dresses here are from ca. 1880, 1910 and 1960 (all from the fantastic Brooklyn Museum clothing collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art). Although stunning, look closely and you'll see stains, discoloration, torn tulle and fragile silk.

It's not glamorous, but the reality is that sweat, dirt from the floor, a splash of wine, or an unknown stain (a dropped green bean or a dollop of frosting) will show up years later if not properly cared for. Fear not! There are things you can do to slow down this process.

Here's how to slow the march of time:

1. Find a cleaner you trust and who doesn't use PERC, an environmentally harmful substance that dry cleaners have traditionally used. Ask your married friends or the salon you purchased your dress from for recommendations. Hand-cleaning would be best (or a mixture of the two), especially if you have intricate beading or fragile fabrics on your dress. Request a thorough inspection of your dress so you feel confident the cleaner is using the best materials for your specific piece. Do this as soon as possible after your wedding because the longer the stains sit on the fabric, the greater the risk they will be set. Maybe it can be your maid of honor's final duty to drop your dress off at the cleaner you choose while you are sipping a mai tai on your honeymoon!

2. Make sure the cleaner you choose uses acid-free tissue or muslin (no plastic please) to wrap your dress, and properly pads the dress. Over time, if silk isn't properly folded, it gets dry and will crack, so every fold needs to be padded with acid-free tissue. Preferably, once padded, the dress would be loosely wrapped in muslin (a non-dyed cotton fabric). This will prevent any dust or other rogue contaminants from settling on your dress. Lastly, the dress should be placed in an acid-free box (no cardboard!!). The Container Store sells archival acid-free boxes you can purchase if your cleaner doesn't have that available.

3. Store your little bundle in a place that is relatively temperature stable (cold is better than hot)and that isn't exposed to drastic temperature changes or humidity fluctuations.

The expense of this process (probably anywhere from $300-$1000, depending on the material and complexity of your dress) is worth it. Your dress, which was possibly a major expense in itself, is a reminder of the happy moments of your wedding day, so treat it as the heirloom it will become.

Another reason to wear WHITE! Or a reason to be bold in your favorite colors. I'm an absolute fan of Bridal showers because they allow the older female members of a brides family (or family to be) to celebrate or help prepare her for her BIG day. The bridal shower is a time to get all dolled up "Breakfast at Tiffany's" style and receive your something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.

Many brides over recent years have come away from this tradition and opt only for a Bachelorette party. But let me give you some amazing planning ideas and tips if you are thinking about having one.

Where? When? And who?

Now is the time to pic your favorite restaurant, or have a backyard tea. If you have a venue you dreamed of having your wedding at but couldn't, due to the size of your guest; now is the time to book! This bridal shower doesn't have to be at a particular time of year or day. Just select a time that allows you to spend with those in your family that may be too young to go to Vegas or too mature to see those spicy unmentionables ;)

Theme? Atmosphere?

Mimosa Soriee' or British Tea Time anyone? Let this occasion be the time when your mother allows you to borrow her pearls or your great grandmother pins you with her husbands "going out" pin. You can go all french-roll or have a small gathering at a family friends beach house.

BHLDN is now open!

BHLDN officially opened its doors yesterday at its very first location in Houston's own Highland Village. For those of you who don't know, BHLDN (pronounced beholden) is Anthropologie's sister store for all things wedding. From the moment you set foot in the store you are whisked away to a world of romance, beauty and whimsy. The stores beautiful palette of gray, white and stunning distressed wood combinded with its warm lighting is not only inviting, but incredibly calming, as well.

When you enter the store you walk into a room filled with amazing bridesmaid and any occassion dresses. Sprinkled around the room are cases filled with stunning headpieces made by Jennifer Behr and vintage beaded bags they found at French flea markets. You then head down a wide hallway where you find the decor room tucked away to the side. This is a small dark paneled room filled with the most amazing little things- from stationary, to unique escort card holders, to handmade cake toppers, you are sure to find something to add that special touch to your special day. Heading back out to the hallway you enter into the store's shoe salon and accessories space. Right off of the shoe salon is the room dedicated to the most amazing, delicatly beautiful lingere. You then walk to the back of the store, and just when you think things can't get any better, they do! The room is filled with mannequins dressed in BHLDN's stunning collection of wedding gowns. The gowns are priced from $600-$6,000 and range from size zero to twelve. The amazing thing about BHLDN is that you can have your gown in hand within three days of purchasing it!

On Wednesday I had the privilage of attending BHLDN's Wedding Indusrty Brunch. Below are a few pics I snapped on my phone's camera :)

One neat fact I learned from talking to BHLDN's incredibly sweet staff is that each of the spacious dressing lounges are equppied with iPod docks so Bride's can listen to their own Ipod!

Whether it's because you're on a budget, or simply because you are crafty, there are a ton of fun do-it-yourself projects that you could use for your wedding.

Invitations are such an important part of declaring the style of your wedding. They are the first glimpse that guests will get of your big day.

If your wedding falls on the elegantly traditional side, you probably want your invites to convey that classic feel.

There are so many things you can do to personalize your invites, but here are some things to remember regardless of your style:

Plan to mail your invitations by at least 6 weeks before the day of your wedding. This will allow you to set the RSVP deadline for around 3 weeks before your big day, enabling you to track down non-responders before the craziness of Wedding Week sets in.
Approximately 85% of the people you send invitations to will attend your wedding. But this number can be affected by things like having a high number of out-of-town invitees or getting married on a holiday weekend.
If you are addressing the invitations yourself, make sure to write on the envelopes BEFORE putting the invites inside. If you don't do this, you might leave indentations on the invitations!
Order more invitations than you think you will need. If you're a klutz like me, you are bound to spill your drink at the most inopportune moment or accidentally set your elbow on the next invite leaving a big, ugly crease. Trust me, you'll be glad you have spares!

A couple weeks ago, we posted about sparklers as a send-off. During this burn-ban here in Texas, sparklers aren't always an option, and some venues don't allow them. So what are some fun alternatives to this popular choice? Never fear...there are many creative ways to take your leave for the first time as man and wife!

The pic above shows ribbon streamers--a fun DIY way to incorporate your colors. For a fun vibe, make vintage-inspired pennants with your monogram and colors. Etsy also sells hand-rolled streamers in any color you can imagine: (http://www.etsy.com/listing/63074147/100-hand-rolled-wedding-ceremony). They make for a really cute picture!

Bubbles! This pic shows bubble guns (a fun switch-up from the more common wands) but you can always have custom bubble wands made tied with ribbon in your colors.

For the more creative bride: paper airplanes! Maybe your stationer can create something that goes along with your theme or colors and includes your new monogram. Or if you are crafty, hand-letter them with a sweet note about starting a journey together as a married couple.

Maybe your band can lead you out in a New Orleans-style parade? Or if you get married during the Christmas season, give your guests jingle bells. If your wedding falls near to New Year's, noisemakers would fit the bill. Throwing lavender or a variety of herbs would be a nice summer or spring send-off. Planning or dreaming up a wedding with this theme, I have a great seating chart feature for you. Use wine corks with your guest names on them to direct them to seating! This unique and theme apporpriate touch could also double as a guest favor.

Thinking about your table settings is a small detail that often gets over-looked. I think that your place settings allow you to add extra charm to your event. You can add an element unique to you and your wedding. For example, a small flower tucked into each napkin, a menu card, your favor placed at each setting set on top of a beautiful colored napkin. Creative Centerpiece Ideas

Although I love floral centerpieces, sometimes you might want to go a less traditional route and do something different. I went to a wedding recently where some of the centerpieces were vases filled with water beads. It was the first time I had seen that done at a wedding, and it got me thinking about some other creative centerpiece ideas.

The water pearls in the vase are created by adding water, which forms the spheres. They look beautiful, and you can choose from a variety of colors.

Another interesting idea is to use upside-down wine glasses as decorative pieces, as well as candle-holders.

If you want a fresh look, using fruit can be a great way to brighten up your tables. These are especially nice for spring or summer weddings.

Using fishbowls is another great centerpiece idea. The decorating options are endless - you could use live beta fish or goldfish, floating candles, flowers, seashells, or whatever else you desire.

If you're a fan of floating candles, and want to go for a softer look, this centerpiece could be for you. Keep in mind to go for a sturdy base for your bowl of floating candles and rose petals. You could also opt for red roses for a change of mood, or any other color to suit your theme.

Finally, in my opinion, you can never go wrong with candles. They're perfect for adding a soft glow and romantic feel to your wedding. This might look hard to recreate, but all it takes is a whole lot of tea-light candles, some floating candles and wide vases.

Whether you decide to stick with traditional floral centerpieces, or try something a little different, there are countless ideas out there to create the perfect centerpiece that suits your personality and your wedding.

Band or DJ...which one is right for you?

Music is no doubt the life of the party at your reception so when choosing a professional DJ or a live band you want to make sure that they match your personal style. Here are a couple of other things to keep in mind for your search.

Cost: Generally speaking, a DJ can be more affordable than a live band.

Sound: Nothing beats the sound of a live band over pre-recorded music.

Variety: a live bands repertoire can be limited if you are looking for a wide range of music.

Space: check with your venue to see what works best in the space you are given.

Whether you choose a DJ or band make sure to give them a personal list of what you want to be played and what you don't want to be played.

Also, remember to see your band or DJ in action before you decide!

Wedding Sparklers

Brittney and Matt's Sparkler Send-off at Camp Lucy

Hope your 4th was a fabulous one! I, personally, missed the fireworks - darn drought! We're lucky enough to have amazing fireworks at several of our weddings each year, and sparklers at probably close to half of our Austin weddings. I figure this pretty much makes us sparklers experts! Sparklers can be a fun and dramatic finale for your celebration, but there are a few things you should keep in mind:

Consider your space. Is there enough room for your guests to comfortably form two lines and still have plenty of space for the two of you to walk through? How about when those guests are wielding sticks of sparking ambers? Make sure there's plenty of room that you minimize your risk of being touched with a sparkler. Did you know that sparklers burn at a higher temperature than a lighter? You don't want them too close to your (or your hair or your dress!).
Be honest with yourself - are your guests responsible? Remember that most of your guests will likely be quite inebriated by the end of your celebration - how responsibly will they handle fire?
Buy the 10" sparklers. Sparklers come in all sorts of sizes, and "they" will tell you that you need to buy the long ones. Don't do it! The huge sword-like sparklers burn far longer than needed and let's be honest, do you want your drunk guests holding fire longer than necessary? ;) The 10" sparklers are plenty long enough because we at STC have sparkler-lighting down to an art. We know exactly when and how to light them so that the timing is perfect. Any longer and they'll put out too much smoke, shorter and they'll go out before you've made it through the line.
Check with your venue. More and more venues are prohibiting the use of sparklers. Sometimes there's some wiggle room but you want to choose your battles wisely - how important are wedding sparklers to you?

A couple of Saturdays ago I had the absolute privilege of coordinating Glee-Ann and Robert's wedding at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and The Hilton Post Oak. I met them back in September and from day one the planning process was truly a delightful experience. Glee-Ann is the kind of person that you cannot help but smile after spending five minutes with her! You can imagine how I felt after our hour long meetings-I was grinning from ear to ear!

Glee-Ann has a clean, pure and elegant design aesthetic, as well as an eye for detail. Together we created a palette of all creams and ivories, which we pulled through the entire ballroom. From the stunning flowers (Lisa truly out did herself) to the beautiful lines with matching chair covers and caps everything had a clean, elegant feel. The array of votives and floating candles on the tables glistened off the glass chargers so beautifully, creating the same affect the warm amber lighting had on the rhinestone belt on Glee-Ann's breathtaking Vera Wang gown. The ballroom had a warm, inviting energy, just like that of the amazing couple!

One of my favorite parts of any wedding is the cake. Bride’s cake, groom’s cake, white cake, chocolate cake, and everything in between – I love it all. I come by this obsession quite naturally…my grandmother will not leave a wedding reception until she tries a slice of both the bride and groom’s cakes.

But there are so many options when it comes to wedding cakes that making the decision of what you like best can be a headache. Here are some tips to remember:

If you’re having a multi-tiered wedding cake, each tier can be a different type of cake. So if you love chocolate cake, but your husband-to-be prefers strawberry, that’s ok. You can a have tier for each flavor!

The rule is that around 50% of your guests generally leave once they get their slice of cake. So if you’re hoping most of your guests will keep dancing well into the night, don’t cut the cake right after dinner.

More and more couples are opting for their favorite dessert or some other delicious treat instead of having the traditional cake. If you consider going this route, have fun with it! Perhaps choose a dessert similar to what the two of you shared on your first date. Or maybe each of you has a favorite childhood treat that you’d love to share with your guests. There are so many websites out there that focus on weddings, but these two are worth a second look.

I'm sure y'all have heard of Anthropologie's new site BHLDN (http://www.bhldn.com/) but in case you haven't checked it out lately, you should. They have expanded the website to include decor, honeymoon attire, accessories, and, of course, bridal fashion. They even have sections by theme, such as vintage and glitter. And for our Houston brides, they are opening a store in August! Check it out!

And speaking of bridal fashion, http://www.theaislenewyork.com/, is a members only website that gives you access to couture bridal gowns at discounted prices. Happy Wife, Happy Life, and the overlooked Groom

Yes, brides it IS your special day but often the groom in your life gets overlooked. Some grooms are totally ok with letting his DIY bride and her knowledgeable “fairy god-mother” (the wedding planner) plan out all the details for their wedding. Then again, some grooms would like to chime in a few desires and wishes but scared their bride will become BRIDZILLA. I understand… it may be hard turning over some of the decisions about décor to your “pizza and college sweat-shirt wearing groom” but how about incorporating him and his ideas into some of these areas. You may be pleasantly surprised at the unique touches it adds to your wedding celebration.

Adding flair to his attire:

Allow your groom to show his fun side by adding something special to his attire like a fun pair of shoes, argyle socks (in your color theme of course), or even fun cufflinks. Casual and unexpected details are sure to be remembered by your guest.

Grooms Cake:

Ok…Ok Not the bride willing to give up that much say in your wedding photos how about having him design his own grooms cake. He could make it all about his favorite sports team, it could be a ode to his college fraternity, or even a model of mans best friend. But allowing him to have an element of the wedding specific to his personality and interest makes him feel as special as you feel in your wedding gown.

Another cool way to allow your grooms special interest to be infused in your wedding day is to allow your groom to choose a not so average way to arrive at his wedding. Maybe he has an interest in vintage cars, rent a Royce Royce for him to arrive in. For a smaller wedding allow budget for him and his Best-man to arrive on motorcycles. No, this may not be your ideal way to arrive at the wedding, but showing your groom that this day is also about him keeps his hands out of the more important decisions you may want to pick... like the venue. Remember, this is the first day of the rest of your lives and it should represent the bride,the groom,and a little compromise ;)
